The Jesup High Baseball team ended last week on a high note, as the J-Hawks captured a pair of victories to win their own invitational tournament on Saturday, June 11.

The Jesup bats continued to deliver, as the J-Hawks defeated Ed-Co 13-3 in the first game. Jesup then won over a vastly improved Independence Mustangs team 10-7 in the championship game.

Jesup Coach Bruce Wall remarked, “It was a good day for our team.”
In earlier action in the week, Jesup defeated Hudson 6-5 in a closely played game at the Jesup field on Monday, June 6.

With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning, Garrett Weber of Jesup hit a long fly ball to deep center field. A high wind was blowing out of the southwest, and the Hudson centerfielder misplayed the ball into a double for Weber.

Adam Lamos then tripled for the J-Hawks, bringing in Weber. Paul Seliger hit a long sacrifice fly to left field to score Lamos. Jesup led 5-3 at the end of the inning.

The Pirates immediately tied the game up in the top of third inning. With one out, Hudson had two consecutive doubles, followed by an error, and the Pirates scored two quick runs.

The wind was playing havoc on fielders for both teams.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jesup scored the final run of the game, as Lamos singled, stole second, and made his way to third. After Seliger flew out to left, Calvin Vogel delivered the winning run, by hitting a fielder’s choice grounder to the pitcher. Lamos scored to make the score 6-5, Jesup.

The teams were unable to score any further runs in the game that lasted seven innings.

On Tuesday, June 7, Jesup paid a visit to Denver to take on the Cyclones. Denver won 10-0 in 5 innings, as Jake Kuennen tossed a pretty no-hitter to silence the big bats of Jesup.

Jesup Coach Bruce Wall remarked, “What can you say? Kuennen and the Cyclones dominated us in all facets of the game. Kuennen and (Keith) Worner pitched no-hitters in consecutive games last week. They are definitely a force to be reckoned with.”

The game scheduled with East Buchanan at Jesup on June 8, was postponed due to rain.

Jesup defeated Union-La Porte 12-1 in 5 innings, on June 9, in a game played on the Jesup field.

The J-Hawks jumped on the Knights early in the first inning for 6 big runs, and the game was never in doubt. It was just a question of how many runs Jesup would score for the game.

In the bottom of the first inning, the J-Hawks sent 11 batters to the plate with varying results.

Adam Lamos walked, Paul Seliger took first, after being hit by a pitch, Calvin Vogel walked, and Shaye Mason walked to start the inning, as Lamos scored.
With one out, Alex “Opie” Smith singled, scoring Seliger. Sam Harting then singled, scoring Calvin Vogel. Levi Vogel walked to score Troy Detweiler pinch running for Mason.

Garrett Weber hit into a fielder’s choice, before Lamos cracked a single, scoring Harting and Levi Vogel. Jesup led 6-0 at the end of the first inning.
The J-Hawks struck again in the second inning, as Calvin Vogel and Mason both singled to open the inning. After Matt Elliott walked, “Opie” Smith hit into a fielder’s choice, but Calvin Vogel was cut down at the plate on a perfect throw from the Union shortstop to the catcher.

Harting grounded out to short, scoring Detweiler, pinch running again for Mason. Levi Vogel then hit into a fielder’s choice scoring Elliott. Jesup led 8-1.

The J-Hawks scored two more runs in the third inning, as Seliger walked, Calvin Vogel tripled, and Smith brought Calvin Vogel home with a single. The J-Hawks led 10-1.

Jesup salted the game away in the bottom of the 4th inning. With two out, Lamos and Seliger reached first on back-to-back walks. Calvin Vogel was safe on an error by the first baseman as Lamos and Seliger both scored.
The win over Union was a solid team effort by the J-Hawks.

Garrett Weber pitched well and got the win for Jesup with a complete game victory.

Calvin Vogel, Mason, and Smith had two hits each. Lamos, Smith, Harting, and Levi Vogel all drove in two runs each.

Jesup had just eight hits for the game, but combined with walks and errors, the J-Hawks made those hits count.

Jesup traveled to Parkersburg on June 13, for a conference game with Aplington-Parkersburg, and the J-Hawks paid a visit to Dike for another game with Dike-Hartford on June 14.

On Thursday, June 16, Jesup will host Wapsie Valley in another conference game.

The schedule remains heavy, as the J-Hawks travel to Grundy Center on Monday, June 20, and Jesup will visit NU High Cedar Falls on Tuesday, June 21.

The J-Hawks host the Oelwein Huskies in a Varsity doubleheader on Wednesday, June 22, at the Jesup field.
