Jesup Baseball Senior Night held June 30
After strong storms moved through the area cancelling Thursday’s night game against Columbus, the Jesup baseball senior night recognition was held on Friday, June 30, in a game against Aplington-Parkersburg. Jesup won the game, 6-4. The seniors honored were Jackson Fleming, Austin Harris, Ben Hummel and Drew Schmit. Jackson, number 32, is the son of Wade and Tammy Fleming. He has one brother, Drake. He has been a starting pitcher and 2nd baseman for the team this year. Jackson is a 4-year letter winner in baseball, a member of the 2015 District Champion team and a 4-year NICL All- Academic scholar. He also played football and golf in high school; and was involved in the Extended Learning Program, Jesup After School Program and physics competition team. Jackson plans to attend college this fall and study business. Austin, number 6, is the son of Jason and Lori Harris. He has three siblings, Alexis, Alex, and Alayna. Due to an injury early in the season, he has not seen much baseball action this summer. Austin is a 3-year letter winner in baseball and a member of the 2015 District Champion team. He was named to the 2015 2nd Team All-Conference team. He also played football in high school. Austin plans to attend Kirkwood College this fall to become a Physical Therapy Assistant. Ben, number 16, is the son of Steve and Dana Hummel. He has one sister, Brenna. He has been a starting pitcher and 2nd and 3rd baseman for the team this year. Ben is a 4-year letter winner in baseball, a member of the 2015 District Champion team and was named to the 2016 2nd Team All-Conference and 2016 2nd Team All-District. He also played basketball and golf in high school. Ben plans to attend Hawkeye Community College this fall and then transfer to the University of Northern Iowa to pursue a business degree. Drew, number 2, is the son of Steve and Karma Schmit. He has one brother, Spencer. He has played catcher for the team this year in addition to some pitching. Drew is a 5-year letter winner in baseball, a member of the 2015 District Champion team and was named to the 2015 2nd Team All-Conference and 2016 2nd Team All-Conference. He also played football, basketball and golf in high school. Drew plans to attend college this fall. During the Aplington-Parkersburg game, the J-Hawks led the whole game scoring one run in each of the first three innings. They put up 3 runs during the fifth inning. Aplington-Parkersburg tried to come-back in the sixth and seventh inning, but it was too little, too late. In a high scoring game against Don Bosco at home on July 3, the game had to go to extra innings to be decided. The J-Hawks started off with a run in the first inning but the Dons came back with three runs in the second inning and five runs in the fourth inning. Not to be outdone, Jesup scored 3 runs in the fourth inning and another five runs in the fifth inning, now leading 9-8. But the 7th ranked Don Bosco team fought back in the sixth inning with two more runs and Jesup scored a run in the seventh inning to tie the game at 10-10. In the extra inning, Jesup could not hold back the strong Don Bosco squad losing to them, 11-14. Jesup traveled to Dunkerton to take on the Raiders, July 5. The J-Hawks came away with the win, 12-10, but it wasn’t easy. Dunkerton scored 7 runs in the 4th inning, leading Jesup 8-3. In their comeback bid, Jesup scored four runs in the fifth inning, one run in the sixth inning and four more runs in the seventh inning to take the win. In the final game of the regular season, Jesup traveled to Denver on Thursday, July 6. They lost in extra innings, 3-4. Jesup ends regular season play with an overall record of 16-10. In conference play, the J-Hawks end the season with a record of 15-8. The J-Hawks played their first Class 2A, District #6 game on Tuesday, July 11. Results were unavailable at press time. If the team wins, they will play again on Saturday, July 15, at 7:00 p.m. at the Aplington-Parkersburg field.
